To market something is to make it beautiful in the right way, which creates ideological risk. Irony is a way to mitigate that risk by subverting the nominal beauty. But unlike cynicism which arrests action, irony allows you to proceed anyway. It just makes denial of risks harder.

Yes but I'm not sure I follow you, in how irony makes the denial of risk harder I feel like some people ironically ride the bomb right out of the bomb bay into the air, riding it cowboy style, whooping + ironically denying the risk, right down to the ground where it all explodes

seems like the key is that the irony needs to be in relation to and incremental to the nominal objective (rather than simply replacing the nominal objective with an arbitrarily ironic one)
