Really weird how Slack and Discord were very similar products that emerged at around the same time (2013-15), but went in radically different directions primarily as a function of native "vibe" created by initial adopters and which users the product team decided to support.

Slack went all Deathstar Enterprise, and Discord went Subversive Crypto and Web3.
Evidence that "the medium is the message" needs modification for internet media. It's really "the message is the medium"

they didn't start as similar products imo
discord was replacing self hosted voice chat apps for gamers (teamspeak, mumble) and adding some persistent text chat while slack was intended for business communication where voice and video were second class citizens at best

Were they really started as similar products? Slack was very explicitly targeted at the enterprise from Day 1.

The name of each service may have roots as references to 1970s parody religions (church of the subgenius, discordianism).
