In high school, I was constantly like "why does no one talk about what *matters* or intellectual things at all??" Then I learned social skills and how to engage with people as they are / figure out what's interesting to both of you. And now I'm...back to my high school self.

I still think small talk is a valuable skill, and doing fun things with people is great. I'm just much more aware of when we're talking but not in a way that would actually help us figure something out, or about things that aren't what we'd most like to be if we thought about it.

When the goal is to keep small warmth alive between all kinds of people, normal small talk is amazing. When the goal is to find deep connection, small talk can be a great way of figuring out where the mutual good stuff is! When there's no goal...I'm starting to want to tap out.
