I sometimes forget how liberating it is to be an unemployed gig economy rando on the internet with no titles or affiliations or official dignity to worry about. You can just do whatever and are free to make money any way you like.

I’ve been offered honoraria a couple of times in 10 years of doing talks and both times the paperwork was a pita for the amount involved so I just decided to forgo it. True even in lean years.

I honest don’t get why people care so much about tenure. Academic pay is mostly shit even with tenure, and their output suggests they enjoy less freedom of speech, thanks to peer review and publishing pressure, than the rest of us, not more.

Because with tenure you're "only" doing paperwork all the time to get prestige (grants, publication) not simply to keep a roof over your head (job).
