Gamers seem curiously threatened by a non-gaming-centric metaverse that actually works. Why?
I’m mostly meh on games with rare exceptions, but I do like the idea of just exploring or hanging out socially in a rich metaverse if the headset is comfy (my quest 1 limit is 30mins)

I think I just get grumpy when prior art learnings are ignored. I wouldn’t name-check WoW here because normies don’t really want to be a hunched-over cow dude, but FFXIV is like “start with one of hot twink, hot dad, hot bear” for men and that seems worth copying

Think there's a bunch of interrelated reasons
1. They feel like the metaverse has already existed for decades since the first MMOs existed. This gives the "metaverse" a "how do you do fellow kids?" coming from megacorps vibe

it seems like they're mostly nervous because they're seeing the crappy, exploitive pay-to-win systems that already run rampant in mobile games (lesser, pleb games) being brought into more 'real' game mediums.
the threat is, what if their favourite game turns to this dark side

"Threatened" is a bit overwrought. I also think the two publicized approaches (VR w/o ownership, ownership w/o literally any other infra) are both only half measures at best and on their own are not what anyone envisioned with the metaverse concept back in the day.

Gamers are okay with a non-gaming-centric metaverse, "games" like VR Chat that mostly involve exploring and hanging out already exist. The objection is a lack of trust in Facebook and a desire to shape their own future and not be told how things will be

I'm not threatened by the idea, I just think it's dumb. I don't see any value at all in broad integration of our existing immersive virtual spaces. A Facebook integration with a game like FFXIV would be beyond pointless. NFT avatars being carried into such a game would cheapen it

Give me an open world, "Breath of the Wild" style Miyazaki wonderland where I can construct my own crazy architecture according to real world physics and Ill be pretty content.
