after half a day of finally getting my feet wet on web3, gotta admit it's pretty cool
the decentralized ux with a wallet to sign everything as the identity that travels around with you is so much better than passwords or a third party identity thing

You still need to store (shared) identity metadata somewhere, right? Otherwise it's just wallet == pwd manager, signing == specific password auth standard.
Don't see how it enables anything new.

yeah basically... you have to secure the wallet seed phrase offline, but the whole protocol is much more lightweight and doesn't depend on a password manager to stay in business. So long as you have the wallet seed phrase, it's technically feasible to recover your private keys

Decentralized identity seems pretty interesting – know anyone else who's taken a close look?

But why web3? That was the semantic web, circa 2007.
Industry's up to 4 and I don't think we should be left behind.

Going to an e-commerce site and letting them know my balance in advance.. does it work that way?
