Suddenly realizing I’ve never explicitly thought the thought “how can I be helpful to others?”
I mean I try to help if asked or if someone obviously needs help, but it’s all reactive. The proactive thought just never occurs to me.
Not counting “how can I help” ritual exchanges

So some of you naturally go around thinking this thought? Like it’s not taught by your religion or something?
Impressed.

In hindsight this explains why kids always seem confused by interactions with me. I think they expect all adults to be proactively helpful.

On the flip side I’m always surprised when someone steps up to help me without being asked

Funny how some responses seem to take it for granted that I aspire to greater helpfulness
Your faith in me is touching but I’m merely observing, not aspiring to do better

Didn't you get traumatized in childhood? I often find myself thinking "I'd like to make next gens life easier", which is kind of trying intergenerational helpfulness.
On the other hand, being generous usually pays off statistically (you'll get abused but the upside is better)

No trauma tbf. Which increasingly seems like an embarrassing thing to cop to :D
