Suddenly realizing I’ve never explicitly thought the thought “how can I be helpful to others?”
I mean I try to help if asked or if someone obviously needs help, but it’s all reactive. The proactive thought just never occurs to me.
Not counting “how can I help” ritual exchanges

In hindsight this explains why kids always seem confused by interactions with me. I think they expect all adults to be proactively helpful.

On the flip side I’m always surprised when someone steps up to help me without being asked
