Hmm. Maine is popping as potential settle-down location. High on climate resilience.
Would I want to live there long term? Pros and cons? 🤔
Visited Bar Harbor a few times when we lived in the NE. Portland was fine.
Don’t look forward to heavy snow again though.

I lived there from 2003-2016 and go back to visit family in Cape Elizabeth 3-4 times/year. It’s a great place to live - especially in the summer and fall. Winter and spring are tough - for the cold. It doesn’t get that much snow. But yeah, great climate resilience state.

I’m Not sure about it’s climate resilience: “The Gulf of Maine’s waters have warmed faster than 99% of the world’s ocean over the past 30 years. Experts attribute some of that to changing currents.”

Know two Mainers. Population is 60% elderly. Economy is essentially barter, especially for non-tourist towns. Meth is endemic. Winters are HARD. AK girlfriend was nonplussed: the support isn't there. Probably not a fit for you. Try a second-tier college town.

It’s weird and spooky. I’ve always loved being there. (Spent a couple months on one of the islands one summer, pretty much alone. Fond memories.) Have good friends who live there. I’d do it. (First choice is Santa Cruz, CA, but Maine would be second.)

Resident on the coast, can recommend. Much more culturally diverse than the tourist board was willing to admit for many years, people who live here are pushing hard for the climate, and it's not the snow it's the dark. Think of Jan-Dec as a nice annual nap.
