Back at it. Is it just me or did they make the worms bigger in thus compared to David Lynch version? Bugcopters still my favorite part. The brutalist buildings and ships are a bit meh. Somebody said this looks like an extended Dolce & Gabbana ad. Kinda agree.

Why bagpipes for House Atreides? Nothing else seems Scottish about them. Sardaukar look more Ottoman Empire than Roman praetorian guard 🤔 Harkkonens are kinda fun. Pity they’re the baddies.

Special effects/battle scenes good. One thing I’ll give Dune props for is creating meaningful justification for knives/swords with their take on the force field. Nice way to sneak in fantasy weapons while still pretending it’s scifi. Contrast with unmotivated Jedi lightsabers.

Well, that’s done. It was okay I guess. High budget competence all around. Hard to make this material fun. Can’t really update it for 2021 or transpose away from Lawrence of Arabia key. I guess sequels will be better once the worms become the stars.

Is it the third book when the son or grandson actually becomes a worm or something after a round of incestuous breeding? I think I got as far as that part and then gave up.

I think I find Dune depressing because it’s just “shit happens” No real meaning to anything. Just a history of one damn thing after another. Almost more nihilistic than literal history.

You could replace the first 3-volumes arc with a scaled up Kafka. “One day Leto woke up to find he’d turned into a giant god emperor drug-pooping sandworm. So he ruled the universe as a tyrant for 3500 years during which basically nothing happened and it wasn’t even funny”
