I've now spent a couple of decades understanding why Chesterton's fence is there. I get it now, and the reason is pretty stupid and it should be torn down. But now I'm too tired to do the tearing down and it's too hard to explain to someone else.

#TodayILearned that there is an actual term for this logical ... fatum? Fallacy? Whatever. I've always rather enjoyed the counterpoint to it that goes something like: "Tradition is peer pressure from dead people."

DAE wonder whether something better or at least as important might have been previously destroyed and cleared away to erect Mr. Chesterton's fence? Some European colonists seemed weirdly desperate to defect to Native tribes but the inverse never seemed to happen voluntarily.
