I just came across another pair of "opposites" that are "synonyms" in a particular context: "I'm up for that" and "I'm down for that". I'm thinking of calling such pairs "antagosyms"--a play on "antagonym", a word that has two opposite meanings.

no, you're right about the odd metaphor. flash bulbs go off, light bulbs go on. it's neat that 'go off' and 'go on' can be read as antonyms, or near synonyms but there's a difference in aspect, continuous vs perfect
both seem to suit epiphany, the enlightened state vs the flash
