When people are in shock, do they actually stop breathing? Is it ever literally necessary to tell them to “breathe”? There’s a wiki page for hypoventilation but it doesn’t mention psychological causes (hyperventilation page otoh mentions panic attacks)

Telling them to "breathe" is saying "be conscious of your breathing. Control your breathing." Not "start breathing because you've stopped." :)
