Funny thing about writing subscription newsletter is that you actually _don’t_ want virality. It would drive unrealistic expectations for routine content and subs/unsubs volatility. You want to stay in a narrow QA band consistently so free stuff reliably samples paywalled stuff.

Kinda explains why the typical type of content is trade news and analysis, often finance/economics driven. It’s easy to tightly six-sigma output, since input raw material is typically narrow band as well.

Doesn’t apply to old media though. They’re still trying to have their cake and eat it too. Big viral scoops AND recurring revenue.
