The concept of a “spy” seems weirdly old-fashioned these days. Kinda like “inventor.”

i do not see that type of inventor very often. i see:
(a) inventors that build a startup
(b) inventors working somewhere (like university)
(c) inventors that build a company around them
(d) classical freelance inventors. very practical people

That’s mostly entrepreneurs and academics operating in teams and highly socialized. That’s my point, the eccentric tinkerer kind is rare now. For eg James Dyson of the vacuum or the guy who invented the Segway.
For yak rover we’re trying to bring back the eccentric tinkerer.

quite a few eccentric tinkerers in the mix here. often the team is provided after the fact of invention and as part of the execution process. for example, doctors with a new medical device idea usually work alone. sometimes experimenting on their kitchen table with animal parts.
