I am skeptical of that historical logic re extrapolating from East Europeans and Irish/Italians. Hispanics span a genuinely larger race spectrum in the Americas, including black. Most don't ?*want* to be absorbed into an expanded notion fo whiteness, anymore than Asians do.

Only at the margins. Stops at a certain skin color. No whites worry about Antonio Banderas replacing George Clooney. The fear starts with hispanics who clearly look closer to Native American or black. Ie the once who can be redefined as "white" aren't the ones driving anxiety.
