I'd posit the converse of this theory: those who know, deep down, that they're replaceable and undistinguished, root their identity in...identity, rather than skill, achievement, or other contributory markers of success.

This is not the converse, but a restatement. Your skill is replaceable precisely when it is a commodity that is nearly ready for automation. It's not that they are unskilled or useless, but that their skills are fungible.
