Is there a name for the opposite of a yak-shave? Some sort of deep, tortuous side quest that's necessary for getting to the main objective, but you DON'T want to do and want to give up on main project to avoid?

annoying nitpick: if it's a side quest that's necessary for getting to the main objective, it's not a side quest, it's the main quest
to try to answer the spirit of the question: ugh fields? labyrinth? effort shock? iceberg shaving? lol

Side quest may be a bad term for it, but yak shaves do refer yo things that are relevant to the main goal, just via very indirect mechanisms.

No bilkeshedding is an unrelated phenomenon where you avoid important matters by working on unrelated unimportant matters that are not logically related at all to the main goal

So I looked up the history of "Yak Shaving". It's inspired by Ren & Stimpy's "Yak Shaving Day" youtube.com/watch?v=5mmISl but only indirectly. Carl Yervin at MIT was talking about the concept, watched the show, and thought it seemed apt for the last step.
