Everybody’s life is 1/100 of a story that deserves to be told. You have to aggregate, anonymize, erase, stereotype, and distill about 100 stories on average to get one worth telling.
Is it possible to separate your story from my story? We're all walking around in a network of stories. So telling "my story" is more like telling my story of the stories I've encountered.
If anyone were to successfully "convey what it feels like to be in their shoes" by telling their story, it would be interesting for others to read. But when most people attempt to do that, their "memoir" is more of a mirror of the world than about themselves.
Every individual is an interesting unique synthesis of stories. But when one tries to share their story of stories, the default is to use established playbooks for weaving them together. This is what makes it boring.
