People tend to work on things that reflect their sense of their own importance. The need to make money distorts this some but not a lot.

I feel like people tend to work on what they think they’re good at (which might be another way of saying the same thing).
The more accurate they are on that assessment, the more successful they become.
For most, perceived competence is far more of a motivation than money.
