I think Durkheim’s theory that simple societies have mechanical solidarity while complex ones have organic solidarity is now broken, especially under the api. You can now have a complex society based on mechanical solidarity. At least for a while.

Mechanical solidarity = fungible labor, reversible patterns of association, low technological complexity, high self-reliance
Organic solidarity = specialized labor, irreversible patterns of association, high technological complexity, high interdependence

Weird solidarity = puddles of human mechanical solidarity within matrix of artificially intelligent organic solidarity (ie specialized automation in interdependent stack assemblages)
We are the technological microbiome

Seems like that while is very short when faced with a disruption that cuts across the various mechanical communities. Crises like a pandemic, a severe weather event, etc reveal interdependencies that the mechanical communities have obscured.

We increasingly rely on quasi-automated responses to that. Pandemic response has largely been institutionalized inter-puddle messaging processed by intrapuddle chatter at the last mile. CDC puts out mask mandates, specific mechanical communities respond in local mechanical ways.

These models will evolve with the metaverse ,automation and Web 3.0 with decentralization being prime drivers of skills and employment. The relics of industrial rev era have stood the test of time but will slowly degrade and evolve into complex solidarities spanning entire world.
