Something I haven’t seen discussed (maybe not looking in the right place) — vertical business models are generally used for attacking a market, horizontal ones for defending a market.
Conversation
I’m mostly a conflict-avoider, but when I do fight, I tend to be pure attack. Lack the discipline to mount any defense beyond obscurity. Blindspot extends to business thinking as well, and I’ve mostly worked with vertical clients, or vertically minded execs at horizontal places

To establish a good, horizontal, defensive position, you have to grow sideways to a large market-contact surface area and absorb 100x more market intelligence, develop a lot more relationships (even if monopolistic) and aim at low-cost leader/infrastructure positioning.

I’ve been working on horizontal thinking and strategy as much to work on my blindspots as to reorient towards what seems like an emerging long-term trend.
