“You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” has been really true in the last decade. Steve Jobs really timed the “die a hero” right in 2011. The tech heroes who lived on have slowly all been recast as villains in the last decade.

Interesting that many replies seem to assume there is in fact a generally applicable absolute standard here, and that falls from grace are automatically falls into truer perceptions. Current perceptions of villainy are no more absolutely true than past perceptions of heroism.

What would you expect from a society that both - knows no history - is convinced it knows everything important of all human history (based on having been exposed to a certain view of the 1960s through 10,000+ TV&movie hours) ?

This is just fashion. People will grow bored with the villianization and in 10 years we'll be right back to lionizing them. There's a chapter in The Selfish Gene that goes into Evolutionarily Stable Strategies, it's the most underrated part of that book.
