Quality is usually understood as a continuous variable. Eg uptime fraction, failure rate, tolerances. But it's actually a sort of staircase with steep and gentle slopes alternating. The "continuous" quality is the gentle slope. The steep slope is when use cases change.

Like cloth masks, cloth masks with filters, N95s, N100s... some use cases don't even begin before a quality threshold is met

There's even 0-1 from non-functional to functional. Like masks that fit so poorly they do basically nothing, but do satisfy masking requirements in covid theater, and reinforce norms if not safety.

Was thinking about how Singapore Airlines was doing restaurant type experiences in its parked planes recently. That's just a zero-quality flight that doesn't fly at all.
