Is there such a thing as improv making? I don’t mean improvise a design for a clear goal but make something interesting with what’s on hand. Like in improv theater or jazz. Unpredictable outcome. You might end up with a clock or a robot.

Like Chopped but not restricted to edible output? Making It with Nick Offerman / Amy Poehler comes close but output is all art/craft.
Feel like it would be tricky to truly release constraints without providing way too much optionality in materials / tools.

its easy to imagine this in adjacent fields like art and crafts generally. It seems like a process limitation: some things need preplanning. for freeform you need to be able to build incrementally if you want to be able to not see where you're going and expect a good result

Project runway maybe? I guess it depends on whether you consider their design challenges "a clear goal." Seems to me they are pretty open ended, e.g. "make a dress out of this stuff"

I went to weekend "Flame Effects for the Artist" class awhile back. On Saturday we learned theory/safety and on Sunday were divided into groups, given assortment of junk and supplies, and made something. My team made a flaming and water-shooting bouquet.
