Unbundling and rebundling identity along vertical/horizontal integration dimensions 🤔
Horizontal: freedom, trust, gamesmanship, rationality, risk, price
Vertical: happiness, loyalty, community, meaning, enchantment, value

I’m naturally horizontal but can play vertical for pay

A viable public sphere requires a citizenry with primarily horizontally integrated identity

Your non-dominant dimension is your unintegrated shadow. You *could* oscillate horizontal/vertical yin-yang to painfully achieve full integration.
Or you could kinda just leave it alone

Self-actualization is kinda overrated. It’s basically a stunt, like memorizing pi to 1000 digits or learning 7 languages.

isn't it just like "having your urges for food/safety/sex/friends sufficiently fulfilled that you actually care about do-gooder stuff"?

of course that's not quite how it works, there are plenty of poor or lonely do-gooders, but isn't the core Maslow idea is that it's easier to want to "give back" when you have everything you personally want already?

not sure where you're going with this... do gooder/giving back is not part of this factorization... I'm partitioning based on what kind of relationship or growth dynamic governs the identity formation. I think there's horizontal and vertical ways of being a do-gooder or selfish

Self-integration/personal growth type meaning. To my mind self-actualization and do-gooderism are basically not related, though they are sometimes correlated under some ethical schemes. You can be a do-gooder without self-actualizing, and vice-versa.
