Adding sensors to our computers revolutionized them. I remember buying my first computer paddles, my first mic, my first webcam, and the incredible new features unlocked by giving computers a way to sense and respond to the physical world. 1/

i still remember an article in 'acorn user' describing how to connect a whistle-activated keychain to a bbc micro so you could make the computer respond to noises

it's a sad "road not taken" thing though - even when PCs got cheap microphones and webcams i can recall very little that encouraged or even enabled hobbyist stuff with them.
