Sounds kinda familiar. I’m only now recognizing the small signs from my childhood suggesting it took significant discipline on my parents part to keep us in the middle class. Not tenuous but not secure either.

Interestingly my parents didn’t try to make us directly sensitive to the value of money. Instead they conditioned us into thinking waste was a cardinal sin and that most expenses were either a “waste” of money or otherwise “bad” for us. Vice-and-virtue based budget discipline.

I don’t remember ever hearing the phrase “we can’t afford it” It was always “it’s bad/not worth it/a waste”… questioning the value rather than balking at the cost A genteel self-care version of sour grapes. 🤣
