By 1920 or so, the 19th century had come to seem as relatively regressive as the 20th century had by 2020. Feeling modern and “with it” is a fleeting thing. Half life of a few decades. Even if you die on the cultural bleeding edge the memory of you will seem regressive in 50y.

Basically everybody is either meme-mummified into a caricature or canceled within a century or so of their death if they’re remembered at all, and if they’re remembered as part of a historical people they’re canceled en masse.

You can and should try to be the most modern kind of human possible while alive but getting attached to being understood as such, especially forever, is a kind of weird delusion. And being regressive while alive is a kind of acting dead. You’ll get there after you’re dead anyway.

Perhaps the interesting thing to do is own and represent whatever your era will eventually come to represent in the historical imagination. I’m kinda happy to represent 1974-20xx in whatever cartoon the 22nd century makes up about us.
