Hmm. Not sure I agree here. Video games are strictly more expressive since they can include the other forms in-game. You can have a song or story in a game, but not really the other way around, outside of stunts. 🤔

16/ There is nothing magical about video games that makes them more monetizable than other forms of media. People love video games, but people also love music, books, films, podcasts, and digital art.

Alt hypothesis to Chris’ Video games will eat all media Tiktok is the beginning of that. Music and dance are fodder for tiktok games based on imitation and ‘yes, and’ improv of short bits. Imitation games are among the simplest. Add AI generation and it’s a whole new world

yeah the engagement potential of video games is significantly higher hence the monetization of that engagement vs. licensed consumption works

that’s not the most magical thing about video games either. The most magical thing about video games is that your behaviour is embedded in your play. It’s like the ikea furniture of media. You play it yourself so you love it more

Recorded music is far more static of a medium - even the most manic rap mixtape release schedule pales in comparison to the frequency with which a game can communicate and respond to its audience

Agree that video games are different / more expressive than "passive" media. I think it's an open question whether *that's* what enables better monetization, or if it's that those other industries are slow to adopt new business models. (realistically both)
