A lot of mental health seems to depend on experiencing wins sufficiently often. If you see someone engaging in mysteriously self-destructive behavior, there’s a good chance they’re trying to set up wins for themselves in a messed up way nobody healthy would consider”winning.”

Mental Health declines can be combatted by resetting your context. If you only live by external rulesets (e.g. capitalism) you’ll probably want to kill yourself quickly. resetting the leaderboard to your own rule set, you can experience more wins, or even abolish winning entirely

I was taught lines like “where ya travelin’, friend?” as an effective way to intervene with people experiencing mental health crises, and it has been a real opener for folks in other states. People respond better to visitors who recognize they’re processing something.

Mental health (aside from physiological disorders) is largely dependent on degree, consistency, and breadth of autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
