Making a meta-thread of embedded adventures with arduino, beaglebone blue, RPi, and any other boards I end up buying.

Arduino subthread. This is where I'm farthest along, since I got it first with the Elegoo kit.

Starting to play with Arduino more. First I’ve fiddled with electronic assembly in ~20 years and the biggest learning is: middle-aged eyesight and finger dexterity suck. Reading resistor values and assembling even a simple circuit was more eye/finger strain than I expected.

RPi thread... I guess this is where anything sufficiently ambitious will end up.

Now at RPi4 level of the game. Still find it mildly unsettling that this thing is basically a Linux computer. Now to do some embedded hello world stuff. Is there an led blink thing here? All Python? I guess I need a case with some cooling.

Random discussion thread I started on history of this stuff, with lots of good insight in the replies of how we got to the world of Arduinos and single-board computers (SBCs) via older microcontroller dev boards/chips.

Feels like when I was a teenager, the electronics kids (I wasn’t one) were mainly building things with 555 timer and op-amp ICs as the most complex components. When did the microcontroller revolution start? With what chips/boards?

Beaglebone blue subthread, the board I'm using for the rover project.

Off to an inauspicious start with the Beaglebone Blue. The network drivers won’t install on MacOS Catalina. Apparently the packages, HoRNDIS and EnergiaFTDIDrivers (no idea what they do… ELI5?) do shady shit at system level so Catalina sez no.

Oh I feel your pain. I ordered one of these when I started messing with wires again. $10 well spent
