There’s this frustrating period in learning language-like things where you’re semi-literate so you can mostly only see letters, the occasional word, the rare sentence, and almost never complete ideas.

Things don’t get to be fun until letter level is unconscious, word level is subconscious, and conscious thought starts at sentences. Even there mostly autopilot.

Is it only "language-like" ? My youngest daughter has recently been frustrated at people just walking around, like she's the only one who can't.
Genuinely interested, thinking of Wittgenstein.

well, language-like is the one where I can confirm from anecdotal experience, but I imagine it's more generally true...
