Music metaphor: If “project” is like “composition” and “skill” is like “scale” or “chord” I need something intermediate, like a raga. Like “clockwork” is a raga but “rover” is a composition and “soldering” and “Arduino” are scales/chords.

Surveying my pile of loot from prime day, a thought strikes me… maybe the real purpose of maker projects is to rein in the shopping by guilting you into thinking you should actually have a reason for everything you buy and sincere plans to learn it all. Does slow you down.

I had a similar realisation with a recent woodworking project. I made a big bookcase to hang on a wall. The learning/buying ratio definitely goes up when you're choosing a technical path rather than just wanting things.

Will do once it's on the wall. It's currently behind the sofa as I've got to find time when kids are not present to mount it. Here it is after painting.
