Music metaphor: If “project” is like “composition” and “skill” is like “scale” or “chord” I need something intermediate, like a raga. Like “clockwork” is a raga but “rover” is a composition and “soldering” and “Arduino” are scales/chords.
Surveying my pile of loot from prime day, a thought strikes me… maybe the real purpose of maker projects is to rein in the shopping by guilting you into thinking you should actually have a reason for everything you buy and sincere plans to learn it all. Does slow you down.

The microscope is a bit of a non sequitur in relation to my main line of robotics. But it gave me an idea… to use my other microscope, cheapo pocket usb, as the primary payload on rover. Mount it so it can explore my carpet at microscopic scale. That’s almost as alien as Mars.

Good point. In some way, some of the effort/intelligence required to actually do things in craft is moved over to effort in understanding tools/equipment/materials and making good selections. One reason I don't feel *too* guilty is I'm learning a shit ton simply dong the shopping

Would fixing and maintaining things fill this niche? Gives you an immediate instrumental use for new marginal knowledge and tools. Carves out each next small incremental step into a huge system.

Not for me. I think that’s more like tuning instruments, restringing guitar etc? There’s pleasure of doing necessary work but no aesthetic rehearsal and creative aspect.

nah, ragas are not analogous to katas... they are not set etudes/compositions but somewhere between a scale and a melody meant for improv use (basically a set of ascent and descent note patterns)
