Something I don't think people get is that you actually can not "elbow grease" your way into being a profitable smallholder. You can't get a little money, add a few acres, repeat - you have to get the acreage and everything to support it in one hit, and you need a million dollars

Average land price in US: $3-4K/acre. Within commuting distance of city jobs, $6-8K/acre easy.
40 acre homestead: $120 - $320K just for the land.
House & utilities: $50-200K
