Feels like when I was a teenager, the electronics kids (I wasn’t one) were mainly building things with 555 timer and op-amp ICs as the most complex components. When did the microcontroller revolution start? With what chips/boards?

huge caveat that i was not anywhere near this area of interest in the mid 2000's, but imo the rpi transformed everything in the same way the ford model t did - it wasn't the first, it was just the one that made it feasible to put into anyone and everyone's hands, cheaply

Yeah it was another important milestone to be sure. From microcontroller to general computer. In some ways Arduino vs RPi is a meaningless comparison even though they can be substitutes in some applications.

i think the impact rpi had was more rooted in the massive marketing campaign that really focused the idea that you could buy a complex and feature-filled piece of hardware and just let even children tinker away on it. once the idea of 'tinker' / 'project' boards took root... \
