Part 2: math. Light fields are intimately tied to symplectic geometry. the regions where the light field is discontinuous are naturally Lagrangian Submanifolds! These manifolds the most important geometric information about the scene. (This is essentially in Arnol'd’s book!)

It is satisfying to me that the geometry that I study is inevitable, as real as the sun. I finally understand why the natural geometry of vision is conformal geometry -- as Poincare said -- and symplectic geometry -- as Arnol’d explained. (2/n)

Light fields much more closely model the natural symmetries of the problem of inverse graphics. The exploitation of symmetry has been central to recent advances in neural network methods, and this project is an exciting step in that direction. (3/n)
