Watching The Good Doctor. It’s a cross between House and Doogie Howser, but the character is on the spectrum. I think the most extreme I’ve seen portrayed on screen except for Rainman 🤔

Something bothers me about such characters. While it’s nice to celebrate the high-functioning genius end of the spectrum, I wonder if that messes with the care of more typical cases. I was told this is a politically fraught thing in the ASD world...

I agree with you. Such totally fictional super functioning characters mess up narratives in parents' mind. It is a daily struggle for clinicians like me. While I love to see every child getting best opportunities, irrational exhuberance is toxic to the cause.

My understanding is that it messes with expectations and with the public understanding of low-functioning people who are autistic and their caregivers, which can be painful. In the distant past, at least, it was frequently diagnosed alongside other serious developmental issues.
