Once I was in a fender-bender in a no-fault state and the cop explained to me that no-fault really meant “somebody is always at fault” (ie he had to say it was me or the other guy in the report even though the culprit was an overgrown tree obscuring the intersection view)

Technically no-fault means your insurance company pays you regardless of whose fault it was. The companies sort it all out so the insured parties can walk away from the uncertainty of any dispute.

But kinda interesting that it cashes out to always blaming a human in the picture. Zero sum. No acts of god allowed. Interesting scheme that effectively pools all risk.

But the language is weird. “No fault” = “somebody is always at fault” (assuming the cop was right)
