Kinda a pity that legi replaced meccano/erector as the basic mechanical engineering toy. Fastener-fit assemblies have a subtly different mood from interference fit ones. There’s a feeling of permanence. And working with a screwdriver+spanner I think develops different intuitions

And metal is important. I had the original metal kit with tiny nuts and bolts (M3 I think) and later someone gave me a crappy plastic one with like M10 fasteners (too big to swallow?) that was just not as satisfying. Safer I guess.

Our hackerspace just got 5 boxes of the good Meccano stuff from the 60's. We'll see how the kids with computer fingers will fare with real nuts and bolts.
