“scientists say...” is marginally acceptable so long as you go on to name names

I was reacting to the language. “Science says” sounds like “English says” — a way of saying things (carefully, rigorously etc) being peddled as a source of things said.
“Scientist” is like “Englishman.” Without a specific name you don’t know how well they actually speak English.
