I’d put a question mark against both people who leave or join during this window of time and ask questions about it during interview. A culture war tinged entry/exit now requires explanation the same way a gap in a resume does. The explanation could be innocent or worrisome.

I found myself wondering how many people might have been thinking of moving on for other reasons and got promoted by the severance. Six months’ salary is a lovely incentive to jump ship.

I also think they promoted the company as a "family" where everyone is cool and you can do/be anything. This change to a more corporate style "let's ban difficult topics" may be jarring for people who liked the open startupy culture, and that may be unrelated to culture war imo.
