Are there any out-of-the-box useful home robots you can buy today, besides the roomba? You turn it on and it does something useful, like vacuuming, with minimal setup. Not toys or general purpose manipulators that you have to work to integrate like a factory automation project.

By now, there should be a $1,000 “robot” that uses Google Translate, Nuance and Voice Synthesis to perform near-real-time audio translation btw English and other languages. (Not text, audio to audio)

Your definition of “robot” is too narrow (which is why it seems like there are no robots around except Roomba). “Physical” work can be done by “phones with extensions accessing AI from the cloud” and I believe the next phase of robotics will arrive along this dimension.

With closed loop latency, the real world sensing needs to get richer as well. Just vision and audio limits the things that can be actuated. I think what smell and touch enables human with is highly underrated.
