Would it be fair to say that science fiction 1940-80 was much more ideational/conceptual and 1980-2020 much more sensory/atmospheric? The former left me with thoughts, and remembered plots. The latter mostly with feelings and remembered moods

Possibly! I feel like high concepts are maybe harder to execute now because they feel kind of ungraspable? More complex? Thinking about atomic age SF vs... what would it be now lol dark matter age? The Unknowable age?

I think there's some truth to it. Obviously not a smooth transition, as there are still concept heavy stories being written today, and there were also atmospheric stories in the past. James Tiptree Jr, perhaps
