In job positions, many describe the tools the candidate must know. If the company can't solve certain problems, it's because they don't know what are the best tools for that. Job positions mainly describe the candidate, not the problem to solve, that doesn't make sense to me.

Far more often when hiring companies have a solution and strategy in mind and need people to execute it. Only at very senior levels are most companies looking for someone to set direction. And companies try hard to prevent themselves from being dependent on individual employees.

I see. Interesting that innovation and creativity in problem solving seems to be associated with strategy, direction and seniority. I believe companies that open spaces for innovation and creativity at all levels, could have a huge advantage!

Big companies are all about coordination. The value of being big is putting a lot of effort and resources behind whatever you do. Ideas, innovation, and creativity are important but only so far. At the end of the day they have to pick a small number of directions and go with them

Creativity isn’t centralized at more senior levels. Stewardship is. Discovering new ideas isn’t the problem. When you have lots of people they suggest new ideas constantly. Correctly deciding when to bet big on a risky change and coordinating everyone to execute is the challenge.

And don’t get me wrong: I think the senior leadership of most companies is terrible at this. They don’t have some magic skills that are worth the obscene amount they get paid. I often wonder if you’d get equally good results by randomly picking employees to make the decisions.

Haha. Well I only found it recently so it’s new to me! But yeah when I looked at the date I was surprised to see how long ago it was. It’s spry. It has the relevance of a post half its age.
