In the last few years essay writing has gone really barbell. Things are either transparently politically motivated internet-of-beefs hit jobs, or things that leave me genuinely puzzled about why it was worth the effort at all. Stuff that reads like dada non sequiturs.

Stuff is fun to write when you only figure out why you wrote it after you’re done. Knowing before you start and never knowing at all both correlate to not having fun writing. If others are like me, most people are not having fun writing. They’re grinding. With it without an axe.

There *just* might be a glut of writing because there’s now distribution room to fill. Reminds me of when cable channels proliferated in the late 80s leading to a glut of content barely above lorem ipsum for a decade before quality content production started catching up.

Infrastructure expansion shock. Like cable glut caused cable industry collapse before streaming video eventually filled all the dark fiber a decade later. We’re building a glut of text pipes now. Increasingly confident the text Renaissance has turned into a text bubble.

Actually multimedia pipe glut. Audio and video too. All that zoom and clubhouse and discord bandwidth demanding to be filled. Maybe this is why I’ve pretty much withdrawn from all those circuits. Exhausting levels of attention demand. Pandemic on,y accelerated it.

Interestingly, just before pandemic, there was a trend heating up for irl meetings. I tried lunch club once. I think if it hadn’t been for pandemic that would have exploded too and we’d all be sending and fielding 10x invites for lunch/coffee etc.

The new medium I want to get good at is 3-15 second videos that represent hours of backend work, but take like a minute of *marginal* media effort if done as outtake from something else. Like this clip is probably 1 min marginal media work on 15h of project work.

Test of differential bar for my yak rover build. Two 90-degree ball joints, two turnbuckle linkages, 3d printed bar and side brackets, nice red box from iPhone case for chassis. We make progress.

I'm exhausted by the constant shifting of the information deluge and the unwillingness to accept the underlying problem. It's the same in enterprise: IRL meetings --> email --> Slack --> Zoom.
