I challenge anyone to tell me what’s wrong with this approach to fitness

My fitness strategy is “one year on, one year off” I spend a year working out a lot and getting in shape, gaining all the benefits of fitness Then the following year I do no exercise of any kind, but still get to enjoy the benefits since it takes a year to fall out of shape

But it’s not like I’m eating junk food or taking extra risks. I can’t see how not exercising for 1 year has any chance of killing me. At least at this age

Then you’re not really taking the year “off” just sticking to minimum viable fitness regimen... and presumably walking around, doing chores etc. Not just laying around on the couch (which is my high risk attractor state I’d end up in)

Oh yes, still normal everyday stuff. I just find it easier to be at slacking or striving levels than an in-between “maintenance” level of effort

Yeah. The strategy does get costlier with age though. Risk of chronic conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol increase with long periods off. At my age I think going more than a month off is actively risky. Besides tanking mood/energy/sleep quality.

I’m 46. I noticed the cliff-like effect around 42, when costs of neglecting fitness maintenance increase sharply, both immediate and long-term. I frankly wouldn’t risk it even at your age. Keep week-level habit active now. It’s like saving for retirement even if not needed now.
