Need some advice from ppl who are good at email marketing:
I market my business casually here on Twitter and via sporadic messages to an unsegmented email list of 700 subs.

B all the way. Unless you badly need the money, artificially accelerated growth is rarely worth it, has high costs later, and the effort is not indefinitely sustainable. Let the practice grow at an organic rate, don’t promote explicitly beyond things you actually enjoy writing.

this makes some intuitive sense but I wonder by this standard what makes it "artificial" in the bad sense?
no money crunch, just have some more time on my hands (knock on wood) and I've learned so much "on the job" that the only way to progress is getting hired even more
