To his credit I think he evolved quite a bit and deserves quite a bit of his reputation in later years, but in his early years he was basically an ambitious operator. I do t think he developed a deeper moral posture until after 1919 or so. The noncooperation movement.

Is "Aryan moment" meant to be taken as the period why understanding of the idea of 'race' (that had that had developed in Europe) swept across India for the first time, or was it a specific subsequent ethnically supremacist idea?

I wanted to absorb the conservative implications of this without judgement, but I thought it worth noting that they seem to have replicated all the important features in a sectarian supremacism. The concept of 'race' doesn't actually require the genetic distinction to exist.
